In November 1942, shortly before the liquidation of the Jewish community in Krzeszowice, in the Krakow district, Sala Tendler and her younger sister escaped. After wandering for days and nights, they reached the home of Józef Gorecki, a friend of the family’s, who lived in the village of Paczoltowice near Krakow. Unwilling to impose on Górecki, the Tendler sisters asked only if they could stay the night. Despite the danger, Górecki took pity on them and prepared a hiding place for them in a barn. They were hidden and looked after for twenty-seven months, until the area was liberated by the Red Army. Zofia, Górecki’s young daughter, served the refugees food, cleaned out their hiding place, and saw to all their needs. Górecki and his daughter, imbued with humanitarian values, considered saving Jews a moral imperative, which carried its own reward.
On August 1, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Józef Górecki and his daughter, Zofia Krzeszowiak-Górecka, as Righteous Among the Nations.
