Kleinjan Gerhard & Johanna (Smit)

Righteous
Kleinjan, Gerhard Hendrik André & Johanna Antonia (Smit) Gerhard and Johanna Kleinjan hid six members of the Rose family: Fred and Eleanore Rose; their six-year-old daughter, Esther Marianne; Fred’s father, Rudolf; Fred’s sister, Ulla Goldschmidt; and her mother-in-law, Yetta Goldschmidt, who were brought to their house in Enschede by Dik Mos*. Gerhard and Johanna’s two young children never knew about the family hidden in their home, who had to live in total silence, whispering and walking around in slippers to avoid being detected. On July 17, 1977, Yad Vashem recognized Gerhard Hendrik André Kleinjan and his wife, Johanna Antonia Kleinjan-Smit, as Righteous Among the Nations.
