Peeters, Father Joseph
Father Joseph Peeters served as a priest in Comblain-au-Pont, south of Liège/Luik on the Ourthe. He was also active in the underground. Responding to the appeal of Monsignor Louis-Joseph Kerhofs*, bishop of Liège, Peeters lent a hand in securing hiding places for fugitive Jews in his parish. Thus he was able to help Mrs. Pepi Teitelbaum of Liège as well as members of the Fremder family, and found safe shelters for them in his parish. He also distributed food coupons and false IDs among the hiders and made sure that they were well taken care of. His charitable work was well-known among his parishioners, and in the end he was betrayed. Arrested on December 1, 1942, he was executed by the Germans on August 31, 1943 in the citadel of Liège. After the war, he was posthumously honored by the Belgian government.
On February 10, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Father Joseph Peeters as Righteous Among the Nations.
