Karpyshyn, Dmytro Karpyshyn, Anelya Karpyshyn, Bohdan Dmitro and Anelya Karpyshyn were farmers and lived with their son Bohdan in the village of Kociubińce, district of Tarnopol (today Kotsyubyntsi, Ternopil’ District). In mid-1943, the Germans established a labor camp for between 70 and 80 Jews in the Liski (Lisky) khutor, about three km from the village. Among the inmates there, Dmitro Karpyshyn met Abraham Fest, an acquaintance of many years. Fest was born and raised in the area and was popular among the local residents. Fest was being held in the camp with his wife and their 17-year-old son Eliyahu. In November 1943, when the camp was being liquidated, Eliyahu managed to escape after his parents were killed in an Aktion. Thanks to his parents’ relationship with the Karpyshyns, he was welcomed into their home and, despite the danger involved with hiding Jews, he was afforded shelter there at no cost for the last five months of the occupation. Eliyahu hid in the Karpyshyns’ granary, above the pigsty, and Karpyshyn, his wife, and, in particular, 13-year-old Bohdan regularly brought him food and took care of his needs. After the liberation in April 1944, Eliyahu left Ukraine and immigrated to Eretz Israel. He lost contact with his wartime rescuers until 1992, when he met Bohdan Karpyshyn during his return visit to Kociubińce / Kotsyubintsy in order to build a monument in memory of his parents and the other Jews that perished there. On July 7, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Dmitro and Anelya Karpyshyn and their son, Bohdan Karpyshyn, as Righteous Among the Nations.
