Yitzchak Rosner, a teacher in Hlohovec, married Irena in 1939. By the fall of 1944, they had three daughters. During the wave of deportations in 1942, the Rosner family took shelter at different places to avoid arrest. In the fall of 1944, the parents decided to look for a refuge for the children and then look for a hiding place for themselves. They soon found shelter for their children with the Görög family. Initially they took in five-month old Herta. When Irena came by with the other two daughters, Mária Görögová told Irena that she did not feel that she could cope with two more children under her roof. As Irena was leaving the house, the Görögs’ 17-year-old daughter Jolana was coming home. She was surprised to hear about her mother’s refusal to take in the other two girls and brought them back into the house. Jolana persuaded her mother to accept them, promising to personally take care of the Rosner children and added: “They are all so nice.” Apart from Jolana, the Görögs had another daughter who was living in the capital and two sons who were high school students. Although it was principally Jolana who took loving care of the three little girls, all the members of the Görög family were affectionate towards them. One day, Mária went out for a walk with the two older girls, then aged four and five. A Hlinka Guard man tried to entice the older one to reveal her Jewish identity by offering her candy. He succeeded in doing so, and this frightened the Görög family, who moved the two girls to another hideout, that had been prepared in advance. The baby stayed with them. Thanks to the active assistance of the Görög family, Yitzchak and Irena Rosner also managed to survive the war, but the baby soon after fell ill and, to everyone’s sorrow, died only a few months after the liberation. After František and Mária died, Jolana maintained contact with her family’s wartime wards and even visited them inIsrael.
On October 26, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized František Görög, Mária Görögová, and their daughter, Jolana Jirout-Görögová, as Righteous Among the Nations.
