The Strzelbicki family
STRZELBICKI WŁODZIMIERZ STRZELBICKA KATARZYNA STRZELBICKI DIONIZY STRZELBICKI NAPOLEON STRZELBICKA TERESA Włodzimierz and Kataryzna Strzelbicki lived with their children in Kołomyja in Eastern Galicia. Prior to the war, their daughter Teresa (Viola) had been friendly with Etka Feuerman. Etka’s older sister, Regina, was a dressmaker and made dresses for the Strzelbickis. With the Nazi occupation of Kołomyja, the Feuerman family was transferred to the ghetto. During the day, Etka worked at the Strzelbickis, and she returned to the ghetto at night. Her sister, Jula, followed the same routine. During the Aktion on September 7, 1942, Regina and her mother were taken from the ghetto. The rest of the family hid themselves in a deserted house. In June 1943, their hideout was discovered. “Everyone ran away to wherever he could. I rushed to the Strzelbickis,” wrote Jula (later Irena Zalcstejn) in her testimony to Yad Vashem. Her sister Etka had already been staying with the Strzelbickis. The latter kept both of them and helped them to change their names. Etka became Jadzia and Jula changed her name to Irena. Their last name was changed to Ogniowska. Etka busied herself with cooking and doing laundry while Jula fed the rabbits and chickens. At night, they stayed in a big trunk in the cowshed. They would stay there whenever anybody unknown came round to the Strzelbickis’ home. In February 1944, frightened by Ukrainian nationalists, Etka ran away to Czernoiwice in Bukovina. Jula remained with the Strzelbickis. In the fall of 1945, Etka, who was already married and had a child, took Jula in to live with her. They continued to maintain contact with the Strzelbickis who, in 1958, repatriated to Poland. In 1965, Jula was invited by the Strzelbickis and visited Poland as a tourist. Afterwards, she left for Israel. On March 28, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Wlodzimierz Strzelbicki, his wife, Kataryzna Strzelbicka, and their children, Dionizy, Napoleon, and TeresaStrzelbicki, as Righteous Among the Nations.
