Sobolewski, Teofil Sobolewska, Genowefa Sobolewski, Leon In late 1942, two members of the Fuks (Fox) family, the Flak family, and Chaim Rottenberg, fled from the Jewish forced labor camp (Julag) near Tarnopol. After many hardships, the five refugees reached the village of Płotycze, near Brzeżany, where they knocked on the door of Teofil and Genowefa Sobolewska, a poor peasant couple, who lived with their son, Leon. Despite the danger and their straitened circumstances, the Sobolewskis, stirred to compassion by the plight of the five refugees, agreed to hide them in an underground shelter they all helped dig in the farmyard. The Sobolewskis, guided by humanitarian considerations, shared their meager fare with them and saw to all their needs, without expecting anything in return. The Jewish refugees stayed with the Sobolewskis until the area was liberated by the Red Army in April 1944. After the war, the survivors immigrated to the United States while the Sobolewskis moved to an area within the new Polish borders. On June 19, 1989, Yad Vashem recognized Genowefa and Teofil Sobolewski, and their son Leon, as Righteous Among the Nations. File 4301
