Meglicki Konstanty & Zofia (Szymańska); Son: Zdzisław

Righteous
Meglicka Zofia Meglicki Kostanty Meglicki Zdzisław In the summer of 1942, during the large-scale deportation from the Warsaw ghetto, the Kleinman family managed to escape to the Aryan side of the city. The adult Kleinmans had planned to continue on to a shelter promised to them in one of the villages, but they had been expressly asked not to bring their 12-year-old daughter Lilka with them. Searching for a place to hide their daughter, the concerned parents turned to Zofia and Konstanty Meglicki, old-time acquaintances who lived in Warsaw. Without setting any conditions and without asking for any payment whatever, the Meglickis agreed to take Lilka under their protection, and she was received with warmth and love into their home. After they managed to obtain false papers for her, they introduced Lilka as Zofia’s niece to all who asked, and she remained under the devoted care of the Meglickis until the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944. Even after all the residents of Warsaw had been deported from their homes, the Meglickis took Lilka with them and they stayed in one of the surrounding villages until the liberation in January 1945. Zdzisław Meglicki, the Meglickis’ son, lived and worked not far from the village where Lilka’s parents had found asylum. One day in August 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, Lilka’s father came to Zdzisław’s home. He told him that the house where he and his wife had been hiding had been destroyed in a bombing attack, that his wife had been killed instantly and that he had been seriously injured. Zdzisław took the wounded man into his apartment, bandaged his wounds and, despite his own impoverished circumstances, took care of him until the liberation in January 1945. Everything Zofia, Konstanty and Zdzisław did for their Jewish friends was motivated by their genuine love of humanity. After the war, Klajnman immigrated to Israel with Lilka, who continued to correspond with Zdzisław and remained eternally grateful to his parents, towhom she owed her life. On August 11, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Konstanty Meglicki, his wife Zofia Meglicka and their son Zdzisław Meglicki as Righteous Among the Nations. File 5397
