Kajszczak, Józef
During the final stages of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, two groups of Jewish fighters from the Jewish Fighting Organization (ŻOB) escaped through the sewers to the Aryan side of the city, the first leaving on April 30, 1943, and the second on May 10. The two groups were taken by activists of the Gwardia Ludowa (People’s Guard) to the nearby Łomianki grove north of Warsaw, where they waited for escorts to lead them into the forests. Since the 80 or so fighters had to wait there longer than expected, there was growing concern that they would be discovered by the Germans. Bronisław Kajszczak and his son, Józef, who lived nearby, organized food and water for the fighters, until May 20, when the Gwardia Ludowa transferred them to the forest of Wyszków, where they formed into a partisan unit named after Mordecai Anielewicz.
On October 1, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Bronisław Kajszczak and his son, Józef, as Righteous Among the Nations.
