Over the years, the Huczeks from Borysław, in the Lwów district, became friendly with the Halskis, who lived in the same town. On October 15, 1942, during the Aktion, which lasted for about four weeks, four members of the Halski family – Michael, Leon, and Fryderyka Halski, and Zygmunt Lenz, (Fryderyka’s brother) – escaped and asked their friends, Alfred and Helena Huczek, for shelter. Despite the danger, the Huczeks and their 14-year-old daughter, Stefania took them in and cared for them devotedly. In risking their lives to save their friends, the Huczeks were guided by a sincere friendship that triumphed over adversity. Together, they prepared an underground shelter for the refugees under one of the rooms, where the Halskis stayed until the area was liberated by the Red Army in August 1944. After the war, the Halskis immigrated to the United States. Zygmunt Lenz stayed in Poland until his death.
On May 5, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Helena and Alfred Huczek, and their daughter, Stefania Krug-Huczek, as Righteous Among the Nations.
