Duren van, Adrianus & Maria (van Dalen)
In August 1942, the father of the Wallach family was deported to Auschwitz and one month later the mother, one of the daughters, and a son were also deported. The remaining children--- two daughters, Johanna and Rozetta, and a son, Leo---managed to escape to the village of Stevensbeek, North Brabant, with the assistance of unnamed members of the underground. Once there, they found temporary shelter with Adrianus and Maria van Duren. This was not a safe place to hide because one of the friends of the family was a member of the NSB and they were forced to leave. Leo went out looking for another place and met Martin Biemans*, a priest, in the street, who took him home and then took the other two to safer places in the area. Johanna and Rozetta stayed with the van Durens for different lengths of time and kept in contact with the van Durens’ son after his mother died a few years after the war.
On May 35, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Adrianus van Duren and his wife, Maria van Duren-van Dalen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
