Arbomont Albert & Julie ; Son: Lucien

Arbomont, Albert Arbomont, Julie Arbomont, Lucien File 5538 Jonas Meyer and his family, Jews from Luxembourg, fled their country of birth on January 20, 1941, and found temporary shelter in Aix-en-Provence, in the unoccupied zone. Alice Meyer, the oldest daughter and a milliner by trade, looked for a job, although as an alien resident she was not allowed to work. She answered an advertisement placed by Julie Arbomont, who owned a hat shop in town, and introduced herself as a French woman from the Lorraine area. She was hired and told her employer that she was Jewish. Despite the danger, Abromont did not obey Vichy law and report Meyer to the authorities. Abromont also paid Meyer the same wages as the other employees received. In November 1942, when the Germans extended the occupation to the south of France, the lives of aliens, especially Jews without French citizenship, became especially perilous. Under these circumstances, the Meyer family sought to leave Aix-en-Provence and find another refuge, and they turned to Albert and Julie Arbomont. The Arbomonts, aware of the risk involved, offered the Meyers the use of their house in a nearby village. The Meyers left almost all their possessions with the Arbomonts, including Torah scrolls they had brought from Luxembourg, for Jonas Meyer had been president of the Jewish community of Luxembourg. The scrolls, too, were stored in the Arbomonts’ basement. The Arbomonts furnished the Meyers with forged documents obtained from Pastor Eugène Ducasse (q.v.), which identified the Meyers as Christians from Lorraine. They received permits from a French national named Henri Rioufol (q.v.) with which they obtained identity cards and ration cards. Thus the Meyers survived the hardships of the occupation. On December 14, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Albert and Julie Arbomont, and their son Lucien, as Righteous Among the Nations.
