Kondrachuk, Vasiliy Kondrachuk, Anna Vasiliy Kondrachuk and his wife, Anna, were farmers living with their two young children in the village of Kaskada, Kamenets-Podolsk District (today Khmel’nyts’kyy District). Early on in the German occupation, Anna visited a Jewish tailor in Novaya Ushitsa (Nova Ushytsya), where she met Faina Dostman, a friend of the tailor’s daughter. Dostman overheard Anna offer to help the tailor’s family should it be necessary. A few months later, the tailor and his family were murdered in an Aktion and around the same time, while on her way home from the market, Anna bumped into Dostman. Dostman reminded Anna about her offer to the tailor and now she asked for Anna’s help. Anna then took Dostman with her to Kaskada and hid her in their threshing room. A few days later, Dostman’s mother, Etya, and six-year-old brother Alik joined her in the hiding place. They stayed there for three months and no one in the village, including Anna’s children, knew they were hidden there. In winter 1942, Etya decided to go to her Ukrainian acquaintances to take some of her winter clothes that she had stored with them. On her way back she was arrested by the local police, but she managed to escape and returned to the Kondrachuks. When a rumor spread around the village that a Jewish woman had been caught, the Kondrachuks feared that the village homes would be searched. They decided to move their three wards to the town of Kopaygorod in the district of Vinnitsa (Kopayhorod, Vinnytsya District), which was under Romanian control. The Kondrachuks escorted their wards on the eight-kilometer journey under the cover of night. Etya died in Kopaygorod from weakness and hunger, but Dostman (later Fisherman) and her brother Alik survived the war, and returned to Kaskada to visit the Kondrachuks and to thank them. The survivors later immigrated to Israel. On March 30, 1998, Yad Vashem recognized Vasiliy and Anna Kondrachuk as Righteous Among the Nations.
