After the Germans occupied Stryj (Stanislawów district, Eastern Galicia), Renata Koerner was barred from her profession as a schoolteacher. In this state of affairs, Koerner began to tutor her pupils in their homes, including thirteen-year-old Zofia, daughter of Ludwik and Zofia Urbański, who lived on a farm in a nearby village of Wownia. Although they knew Koerner was Jewish, the Urbańskis continued to employ her in their home and provided her with “Aryan” papers. From November 1942 to June 1944, Koerner stayed on the Urbańskis’ farm under an assumed identity, and only after the Gestapo suspected her did she move to Tarnów and take on domestic labor as a Polish woman. The Urbańskis, who had not known Koerner before the occupation, provided her with assistance when she needed it most badly. Their motives in so doing were solely humanitarian; they even paid her for tutoring her daughter. After the war, Koerner immigrated to the United States and, eventually, brought over her pupil, Zofia, as well.
On December 27, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Ludwik Urbański, his wife Zofia, and their daughter Zofia Ebro-Prokesh, née Urbańska, as Righteous Among the Nations.
