STELMASZCZYK JANUSZ-STEFAN
STELMASZCZYK ZOFIA
During the war, Zofia and Janusz-Stefan Stelmaszczyk lived in Warsaw. In April 1944, they were approached by Eugeniusz and Gabriel Grasberg and their mother, who had been forced to leave their previous hiding place (and who had owned a mill in Warsaw before the war), and asked to afford them shelter. The Stelmaszczyks agreed, and the Grasbergs stayed there until July 1944 when, due to regular Nazi searches the three fugitives had to relocate to another hideout. Eugeniusz and Gabriel Grasberg, in their testimony to Yad Vashem, stressed how the Stelmaszczyks acted unselfishly. Zofia Stelmaszczyk in her testimony, wrote: “The basic motive was the natural humane attitude to another person in need. The feeling of a joint struggle against the enemy was significant too.” After the war, the Grasbergs immigrated to the United States.
On February 21, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Janusz-Stefan Stelmaszczyk and his wife, Zofia Stelmaszczyk, as Righteous Among the Nations.
