Siarkiewicz, Mirosław Siarkiewicz, Aniela Prior to her marriage, Aniela Siarkiewicz had worked as a maid for the Halperins in Lwow, and even after she married and moved with her husband, Mirosław, to Przemysl, she stayed in touch with her former employers and their children. In 1942, when Aniela discovered that the Halperins had been killed and that their daughter, Irena, and her brother were on their own, she decided, with her husband’s consent, to go to Lwow and bring Irena back. The Siarkiewiczes sheltered Irena for eight months, treating her like one of the family, until former neighbors recognized her. She then left and joined her brother who was hiding in Warsaw. In risking their lives for Irena’s sake, the Siarkiewiczes were guided by humanitarian motives and by a loyalty that triumphed over adversity. After the war, Irena Halperin immigrated to Israel. On December 11, 1975, Yad Vashem recognized Aniela and Mirosław Siarkiewicz as Righteous Among the Nations.
