Marianna and Mikołaj Szewczenko owned a delicatessen in Sulejówek, near Warsaw. In the Aktion the Germans conducted in March 1942, the local Jews were deported to the Warsaw ghetto and many of them perished in the course of the deportation itself. Among the victims were a couple named Watasz, good friends of the Szewczenko family. The daughter of the Szewczenkos, Maria Musiałowicz, witnessed the murder of the Watasz couple. Motivated by humane feelings, Musiałowicz took pity on Genia and Tadek (also known as- Tuwia) Watasz, the murdered couple’s children, who were crying bitterly over their parents’ bodies. Despite the danger to her life, Musiałowicz took the two orphans away from the mass of Jews assembled at the train station waiting to be loaded on the trains. She took them to the home of her parents, Marianna and Mikołaj Szewczenko, who agreed to take them under their wing. Despite the neighbors’ suspicions and the fear of informants, Genia and Tadek remained in the home of the Szewczenkos, who cared for them with kindness and devotion. From time to time, they also stayed in Maria Musiałowicz’s home. The two Jewish children were liberated in September 1944, and after the war, immigrated to Israel and remained in touch with their benefactors.
On December 21, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Maria Musiałowicz and her parents Marianna Szewczenko and Mikołaj Szewczenko as Righteous Among the Nations.
