Niemyski Lucjan Niemyska Barbara Niemyska Janina Niemyski Krzysztof Niemyska Helena The extensive Niemyski family belonged to the liberal Polish intelligentsia. They were an affluent family with extensive properties in the Łódź and Warsaw areas and the children were known for their social involvement. They had Jewish friends from the liberal professions, doctors, lawyers, writers and journalists. After the annexation of Łódź to the German Reich in 1939, they fled the area and assembled at their large estate of Podkowa Leśna (Warsaw District), which quickly became a magnet for many of their Jewish friends in need of assistance. Even after the German occupation of the rest of Poland, many Jews passed through the estate. Some received assistance in staples, money, arranging "Aryan" papers and some received refuge in the house and in the farm buildings. Among those who came under their protection were the historian Marceli Handelsman and his wife, the writer Beneykt Hertz, and the Salomonczyk family. Particularly outstanding in assistance to the persecuted Jews was the aunt, Helena, who had many Jewish friends. She worked hard to make arrangements for them on the "Aryan" side. She placed her apartment in Warsaw at the disposal of friends who managed to escape from the ghetto. She arranged forged "Aryan" papers for Maria Maramowa, one of her Jewish friends, who was then employed as accountant of the estate throughout the war years. Richard Rosenman, a child who fled Kraków in the winter of 1942 and his grandparents found refuge at the Niemyski family estate. He relates that "they welcomed us and treated as equals, they never made us feel that we were unwelcome or that there were problems, and there were problems". The Niemyski family were idealistic, generous people who helped people in need. On November 7, 2000, Yad Vashem recognized Lucjan and Barbara Niemyski, the aunt Janina Niemyska, the son Krzysztof Niemyski and his wife Helena Niemyska as Righteous Among the Nations. File: 9078
