Mielczarek, Zygmunt
Mielczarek, Henryka
In autumn 1942, Franka Beatus managed to escape during the deportations from the Częstochowa ghetto. She somehow arrived at the home of Zygmunt and Henryka Mielczarek, friends of the family, and after asking them to hide her, they provided her with protection and prepared a well-concealed hiding place for her in their apartment. Risking their lives and receiving no payment whatever in return, Mielczarek and his wife took care of all Beatus’s needs, doing their best to dispel the constant suspicions of their neighbors and others who came to the house. Beatus remained in the Mielczareks’ apartment until the liberation by the Red Army in January 1945, and after the war, was reunited with her husband, who had been in the army during the war, and they immigrated to Israel. Zygmunt and Henryka Mielczarek saved Franka Beatus despite their own impoverished circumstances, and their efforts to save her were motivated only by their humane values and kind generosity.
On March 3, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Henryka Mielczarek and her husband Zygmunt Mielczarek as Righteous Among the Nations.
