Kowarzyk Leon & Maria

Righteous
Kowarzyk, Leon Kowarzyk, Maria In late 1941, a baby girl just a few months old was smuggled out of the Stryj ghetto and brought to the home of Leon and Maria Kowarzyk, a childless couple who lived in the nearby town of Dolina, in the Stanislawow district. Despite being surrounded by hostile neighbors, the Kowarzyks adopted little Irena Henenfeld, looked after her, and saw to all her needs. After the war, when they discovered that both her parents had perished, the Kowarzyks moved with their adopted daughter to an area within the new borders of Poland, where they raised her and provided her with an education. After her marriage, Irena Henenfeld became Irena Chruścik. On January 16, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Maria and Leon Kowarzyk as Righteous Among the Nations. File 6332
