Konieczny, Maciej Konieczna, Marianna Konieczny, Mieczysław Konieczny, Piotr Rosa-Konieczna, Honorata Before the war, the Jews of Dzieraznia, in the Kielce district, had business ties with the Koniecznys, who owned a farm in the village. In the autumn of 1942, when the entire region was Judenrein (purged of Jews), nine Jews – Sydney and Lola Olmer and their son Loke, Sydney’s sister, Tonia, his brother-in-law, Boris Ikowicz, Moniek and Mania Laufer, and two boys called Zelig Frenkel and Asher Rafałowicz – fugitives from the nearby Dzialoszyce ghetto, knocked on the Koniecznys’ door asking for help. The Koniecznys hid the Jewish refugees in various farm buildings, but soon after, built two special shelters for them. At first, the refugees paid for their upkeep, but even when their money ran out, the Koniecznys, with their children’s help, continued to look after them and saw to all their needs. The neighbors, rendered suspicious by the large quantities of bread the Koniecznys were baking and the vast quantities of food they were purchasing, informed the police. One day in the summer of 1943, German policemen raided their farm and ordered the Koniecznys to hand over the Jews who were hiding there. It was only Honorata’s spirited protest that convinced the Germans to depart, after having conducted a fruitless search. All nine refugees stayed with the Koniecznys until January 1945 when the area was liberated by the Red Army. After the war, they immigrated to Israel and the United States, where most of them kept up a correspondence with the Koniecznys’ sons and daughter. On December 28, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Maciej Konieczny, his wife, Marianna Konieczna, their daughter, Honorata Rosa-Konieczna, and their sons, Mieczysław Konieczny and Piotr Konieczny, as Righteous Among the Nations.
