Iwaszkiewicz, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Anna The Polish author and poet Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz lived with his wife, Anna, on their estate in Podkowa Leśna, in the Warsaw district. During the occupation, the Iwaszkiewiczes helped their persecuted friends, looked after them, and found them hiding places. Among those helped by the Iwaszkiewiczes were the Muszkats and their daughter, Aniela, who stayed with their friends in Milanówek, near Warsaw, but were looked after by the Iwaszkiewiczes until the liberation. Another Jewish refugee named Gelbart and his son, Wiesław, found refuge on the Iwaszkiewiczes’ estate, and were later transferred by them to a safer hiding place in nearby Boglewice, where they stayed until the area was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945. The Iwaszkiewiczes also helped the Karwassers who, a few days before the outbreak of war, had bought a plot of land from Anna Iwaszkiewicz. Although the Karwassers paid for the property, war intervened, and the property remained registered in Iwaszkiewicz’s name. When the Karwassers were interned in the Warsaw ghetto, Anna reimbursed them the full amount, and obtained “Aryan” documents for them, which saved their lives. The Iwaszkiewiczes also hid Kramsztyk and her daughter, Joanna, when their hiding place in the village of Kobyłka, near Warsaw, was discovered. (Kramsztyk’s husband was hiding with one of his Polish acquaintances.) When Joanna needed an urgent operation, Anna Iwaszkiewicz arranged for a relative of hers, who was a well-known surgeon, to perform the operation, thereby saving her life. The Iwaszkiewiczes also helped save the lives of Professor Ludwik Wertenstein, a Jewish physicist, and his daughter, Wanda. On January 21, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz as Righteous Among the Nations. File 3760
