Ceremony in Honor of Elzbieta Wyganowska . Yad Vashem, 22.10.1992
Wyganowska, Elżbieta (née Targowska)
In 1937, Elżbieta Targowska and Jola Gall studied together in Vienna. Even before the occupation, Gall moved to Warsaw, and after the local ghetto was set up, she and her mother, equipped with forged “Aryan” documents, stayed on the Aryan side of the city. In June 1941, Targowska went to Warsaw in order to find her friend and help her. After she found her, their friendship resumed, and Targowska promised Gall that she would help her and her mother when necessary. In June 1941, the Germans raided the apartment where Jola Gall and her mother were staying. The mother was arrested and disappeared, while Jola, who managed to escape, somehow or other reached the Czyzow Szlachecki estate, in the county of Sandomierz, (Kielce district) which belonged to Targowska. True to her promise, Targowska gave her friend a warm welcome and, guided by a loyalty that triumphed over adversity, looked after her and saw to all her needs. Gall stayed with Targowska until December 1942, and after Targowska’s marriage, moved with her to an estate in nearby Jeleniec, in the county of Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, which belonged to Targowska’s husband. Gall subsequently moved to Warsaw and, under an assumed identity, lived in the city until the liberation, after which she remained in Poland. The friendship between Targowska and Gall continued for many years after the war.
On August 11, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Elżbieta Wyganowska (née Targowska) as Righteous Among the Nations.
