WILICHNOWSKI, LUCJAN
In early May 1942, Lucjan Wilichnowski was transferred - along with the firm that he worked for - to Wygoda, in the district of Stanisławow. There he happened to meet Maria Engel, whom he had known in his school days. Maria and her husband Stefan were hiding, using “Aryan” papers and worked in the Suka-Sile Bau firm in Dolina, four kilometers away from Wygoda. Stefan was employed as a carpenter and Maria worked in the administration.
“It was difficult and strenuous as one would not earn much, and would always fear discovery,” wrote Engel in his testimony. He added, “After meeting Wilichnowski the situation improved... He used to regularly bring us food, some clothes, help us financially and when it was finally possibile to get kennkartes - he brought them to us. When in March 1944 my wife gave birth, he brought laundry, bedclothes, and other things needed for caring for a newborn. But most important - he kept our spirits up, gave us energy, and cheered us up. He thought of what he did as an obvious and natural thing, and our childhood friendship, cemented by our occupation experience, will last forever.”
On March 17, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Lucjan Wilichnowski as Righteous Among the Nations.
