ANIELA WERNIK-ZAJĄCZKOWSKA
During the occupation, Aniela Wernik (later Zajączkowska) lived in Warsaw. From the beginning of 1941 until early May 1943, she made her apartment available for the activities of the Jewish resistance movement. Josef Kapłan, Chajka Grosman, Arie Wilner, Mordechaj Anielewicz, Edek Boraks, Tuwie Borzykowski, and Tosia Altman were among those who used her apartment as a hideout. They took shelter there occasionally, for a few hours or days, depending on the situation inside the ghetto.
Aniela also took part in transferring money and false documents for Jewish organizations to places such as Piotrków, Częstochowa, Kielce, and Radom. At the ŻOB’s request, she was sent a few times to the Majdanek and Treblinka areas in order to observe the flow of trains carrying Jews. A meeting between the ZOB representative and AK representatives, in which they worked out details for cooperating against the occupation, also took place at Aniela’s apartment.
In May 1943, Aniela was arrested and sent to Pawiak prison.
On November 7, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Aniela Wernik-Zajączkowska as Righteous Among the Nations.
