Vogt, Herbert Herbert Vogt was born in 1909 in Oppeln/Schlesien (today Opole in Poland). During the war he worked in the Reich railway administration in Cracow. Deeply religious and opposed to the Nazi racial ideology, he extended help to many Jews, providing them with forged Aryan papers. During the anti-Jewish Aktion in the second half of 1942, he gave refuge in his house for three days to a Jewish woman, Stefania Kornfeld, and her six-year-old daughter. The young child subsequently remained in his house for six weeks. Another survivor, Anna Shein, received regular warnings from Vogt of impending anti-Jewish sweeps. He provided her with two identity cards, one of a Volksdeutsche and another of a Polish woman, and thus she was able to reside in an Aryan neighborhood. In the second half of 1943, when her life was in danger, he traveled with her to a village where she lived for three months as a Volksdeutsche. Later, when she returned to Cracow, he obtained papers for her that enabled her to go to Vienna. Vogt also provided her with letters of recommendation to his acquaintances, and they assisted her and made it possible for her to get along in Vienna as an Aryan. She remained in Vienna almost until the Russian entry into the city. On March 25, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Herbert Vogt as Righteous Among the Nations.
