File 298
Eugène Van der Meersch, a colonel in the French air force, was active in the Resistance during the occupation. He contributed greatly to the liberation of France and the rescue of people persecuted by the Vichy regime and the occupation authorities. At least fifty-two Jewish families owe him their lives. After the war, Van der Meersch was elected to the French National Assembly and served as its deputy speaker.
