Ubarevič, Elena
Elena Ubarevič, a Russian widow, worked as a senior nurse in an orphanage in Vilijampolė, a suburb of Kaunas, which was headed by the doctor Petras Baublys*. During the occupation, Ubarevič took advantage of her position at the orphanage to turn it into a shelter for Jewish children. She stayed in constant touch with the Jewish underground in the Kaunas ghetto, which would smuggle Jewish children out of the ghetto. Ubarevič arranged official papers for the Jewish children, and at great risk to her own life, took them into the orphanage. In this way, the lives of dozens of children from the Kaunas ghetto were saved.
On May 29, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Elena Ubarevič as Righteous Among the Nations.
