Tenenbaum-Dor Miriam-Maria During the war, Maria Dor lived in the Marymont quarter of Warsaw. She was a widow and she lived with her mother-in-law, Antonina Dor, and her son Marian (who later perished in the Warsaw Uprising). On a winter day in 1943, Maria went to the entrance of Okęcie airfield, where a forced labor camp was situated. She went there to see her boyfriend (and future husband) Moshe Tenenbaum. As she waited to see Moshe (she had brought along a parcel of food), Maria happened to see Anna Gutmer, who had luckily escaped from the ghetto a couple of days earlier. Anna was waiting for her husband, Moshe Gutmer, who was also employed in Okęcie, as well as her brother, Edward Szaron. Anna was shown to Okęcie by a prewar acquaintance of her husband. During a chat with Maria, this acquaintance told Maria that Anna was Jewish and asked her to shelter her since he was unable to hide her anymore. Maria agreed without hesitating. Anna stayed at Maria’s place for two months. In the meantime, Maria acquired documents in the name of Stanisława Wiśniewska, thus enabling Anna to find a job and to rent a room. In April 1943, Moshe Gutmer, Edward Szaron, and Moshe Tenenbaum escaped from the Okęcie camp. Maria helped all three by finding them places to hide. Tenenbaum remained with Maria. During the war, Maria also helped Lilian Stern (nee Zucker) by hiding her on the Aryan side of the city. She also visited her regularly, bringing her food and giving her moral support. Before the war, the Zuckers, who had owned a sawmill, employed Maria and her first husband. After the war, Maria married Moshe and took his last name; she also changed her first name to Miriam. The couple then immigrated to Israel. Anna Gutmer emphasized in her testimony that Maria acted on the premise of “love thy neighbor,” and that she acted without receiving any reward. On April 29, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Miriam Tenenbaum (formerly Maria Dor) as Righteous Among theNations. File 3621
