Szmigielska Stefania (Buczarska)

Szmigielska, Stefania In June 1943, Jakub and Adolf Fillips escaped from the Kamionka forced labor camp, in the Tarnopol district, in Eastern Galicia, after discovering that the camp was about to be liquidated. After wandering around for a week, they reached the outskirts of Trembowla, a neighboring town, where Stefania Szmigielska, a former acquaintance of theirs, lived. Despite the danger, Szmigielska hid them in a small cellar under her home, but soon it became impossible for the two brothers to share so cramped a space. This, plus the fact that Szmigielska was extremely poor, led Adolf, the younger brother, to find an alternative hiding place. Jakub, the elder brother, stayed with Szmigielska until the spring of 1944, when the area was liberated, after which he emigrated to the United States. On October 14, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Stefania Szmigielska as Righteous Among the Nations. File 3233
