Shekhovich Olga

Righteous
Shekhovich, Olga Shekhovich, Nikolay Nikolay Shekhovich, in his 20s, lived in Sambor in the district of Lwów (today Sambir, L’viv District). His neighbors, the Kamermans, were incarcerated in the local ghetto and Shekhovich often went to visit them. He took special care of the daughter Zhenya Kamerman, and brought her food and clothing. Shekhovich occasionally made this visit with his brother’s wife, Olga Shekhovich, who lived in the village of Waniowice (Van’ovychi). Olga knew Zhenya and insisted on helping her in any way she could. On one of her visits to the ghetto, Olga told Zhenya that she and Shekhovich had formulated a plan for her escape. Thus, in the summer of 1942, Zhenya climbed under some hay on Shekhovich’s cart, as planned, and he took her to Olga’s home, where a hiding place had been prepared for her in the cellar. For the following two years, Shekhovich and Olga looked after Zhenya, who had lost all her family, hiding their deed from neighbors and acquaintances. In 1947, Shekhovich and Zhenya married and they lived in Drohobych (previously Drohobycz) until he died in 1988. On July 7, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Nikolay Shekhovich and his sister-in-law, Olga Shekhovich, as Righteous Among the Nations.
