Quintard, Nelly
Scheindel Frankenthal, born 1934 in Antwerp, moved with her parents, Abraham and Esther, to Brussels in early 1942 furnished with forged ID cards. However, in September 1942, with the deportation in full steam, the family decided to go into hiding. They found a safe haven with Nelly Quintard, a widow in her fifties, who hid them in her home, in Brussels, for two years – until the end of the occupation. Nelly Quintard lived by herself in her brother’s house after the latter left for South America. The Frankenthals were financially comfortable and were able to help finance their stay with Nelly, who spent most of her time caring for her wards. Her regular routine was to leave early in the morning with an empty attaché case and shop for food at different stores so as not to arouse suspicion. Coming back with her case filled, she fed her three guests, who never stepped outdoors.
On December 30, 1998, Yad Vashem recognized Nelly Quintard as Righteous Among the Nations.
