Pasternak-Zadorożna (née: Janiszewska), Zofia
In July 1943, after the Germans had liquidated the Tarnopol ghetto in Eastern Galicia, Augusta (Gusta) Reitman (née: Werber) fled through the sewers to the Aryan side of the city. Exhausted and pursued, Reitman arrived at the home of Zofia Zadorożna (later Pasternak), a past acquaintance, who lived in a one-room apartment. Despite the danger to her own life, Pasternak took the Jewish woman under her wing, hiding her during the day in a clothes cupboard, sharing her bed with her at night. Pasternak also shared the little food she had with Reitman without asking for or receiving anything in return. For almost an entire year, Rietman found asylum in Zadorożna’s apartment, until the liberation in July 1944.
After the war, Reitman immigrated to the United States.
On June 28, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Zofia Pasternak-Zadorożna as Righteous Among the Nations.
