Ogniewska, Bronisława
Thirty-one Jews found refuge in the cellar of the home of Stanisław Jackow*, in the city of Stanisławow in Eastern Galicia. Most of the Jewish fugitives were hidden in the cellar for a year and a half as part of a complex rescue operation that involved smuggling them out of the forest into the city and the day-to-day care for them. In order to supply such a large number of people with food and medicine, Jackow was forced to seek assistance from people he could trust, and among those who helped Jackow carry out this rescue operation was Bronisława Ogniewska. Ogniewska worked in a pharmacy belonging to the local health clinic, and because she had access to drugs, she was able to provide medicines as needed to the Jews hiding in Jackow’s cellar. After the war, Ogniewska left Stanisławow and moved to Warsaw. The survivors commended Ogniewska’s part in saving them, and deemed her worthy of being considered a Righteous Among the Nations.
On July 31, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Bronisława Ogniewska as Righteous Among the Nations.
