Nicolas Louis

Righteous
Nicolas, Louis During the years 1934-1973, Louis Nicolas served as police chief in Bouillon, Luxembourg province. As such, he was well placed to help illegal Jewish families who settled in the town in the hope of evading deportation. When they turned to him, he provided them with forged identity papers. Thus he saved the lives of the Wahrhaftig family, the Vlugs, the Willners, and Rosa Kubowizki. By registering these people in the official population registry, Nicolas made it possible for them to receive food coupons and thus to be able to nourish themselves. Shortly after the war, his beneficiaries signed declarations for the purpose of having Louis Nicolas honored by the Belgian authorities, and in September 1945, he was awarded the Medal of Resistance by the Prince Regent of Belgium. The following year, the Jewish community awarded him a certificate of gratitude for his services to the Jews during the war. On March 12, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Louis Nicolas as Righteous Among the Nations.
