Kowalska, Helena
Helena Kowalska was active in the Polish underground, the Homeland Army (Armia Krajowa), during the period of German occupation. She lived, until November 1941, in the ghetto with her first husband Wiktor Ołowiński who was active in the Jewish Military Union. Helena greatly assisted her husband in the smuggling of food into the ghetto and the smuggling of arms for the Jewish underground. She was also involved in the moving of Jewish fighters and children to the other side of the ghetto walls. Wiktor Ołowiński fell in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After the war Helena married Marian Kowalski, a former member of the Polish underground.
On June 27, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Helena Kowalska, (previously Ołowińska) as Righteous Among the Nations.
