Hendriks Abeltje (Aardema) Abeltje Hendriks and her husband, Jan, were active members of the Zefat* Resistance group, which operated in southeast Drenthe, around Emmen. In addition to helping the large group of Jews hiding in the woods near Valthe, they also hid Jews in their homes at various times. The Grüne Polizei arrested Jan Hendriks on July 27, 1944, together with Bertus Zefat. He was taken to the prison at the Amersfoort internment camp and tortured but did not give away any information. He died on November 18, 1944, in Germany. Abeltje continued doing Resistance work until the end of the war. On November 29, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Abeltje Hendriks-Aardema as Righteous Among the Nations.
