Granier Agnès

Righteous
Granier, Sister Walsh, Clara (Sister Agnes) File 4590 Sister Granier was the Mother Superior of the St.-Vincent de Paul convent in Cadouin, in the département of Dordogne. In 1942, while on board a train, Granier made the acquaintance of a fellow passenger named Pierre Crémieux, a French Jew who lived with his wife and three children forty kilometers from the convent. The two passengers struck up a conversation, and Crémieux was impressed by the nun’s noble spirit. In December 1943, manhunts for Jews in the Cremieux’ town intensified and the family lived in constant danger of arrest and deportation. Remembering the nun whom he had met on the train, Crémieux went to the convent in Cadouin and asked Sister Granier’s help in arranging refuge for his family. Two of the Crémieux children were one-and-a-half year old twins. Granier tried to place them in a home in the village. However, the villagers in Cadouin were not willing to risk the punishments inflicted on people who sheltered or assisted Jews during the occupation. Sister Agnes, Granier’s assistant, was touched by the Crémieux’ plight and, disregarding the danger, prevailed upon Granier to shelter the Crémieux family in the convent itself. Consequently, the religious sisters opened their gates to them, providing a safe and tranquil refuge there until the end of the occupation. The sisters treated the entire family devotedly, and after the war one of the Crémieux daughters maintained a friendship with her rescuers. On March 1, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Sister Granier and Sister Agnés (Clara Walsh) as Righteous Among the Nations Walsh, Clare (Sister Agnés) During World War II, in occupied France, Clare Walsh (Sister Agnés) of England was the assistant of the mother superior, Sister Granier* (see volume France) in the St.Vincent de Paul convent in Cadouin, in the département of Dordogne. Sister Agnes was touched by the Crémieux family’s plight and, disregarding the danger, prevailed upon Sister Granier to shelter them. The family remained in the convent until liberation, treated warmly and devotedly by the nuns. After the war, the family remained in touch with their rescuers.
