Duszczyńska Zofia

Righteous
null
Duszczyńska, Zofia In August 1942, shortly before the liquidation of the Wieliczka ghetto, near Kraków, the mother of nine-year-old- Miriam Perlberger begged Zofia Duszczyńska, an acquaintance of hers, to look after her daughter. Duszczyńska agreed. At night she smuggled the child out and brought her to her home, and then arranged for her to reach Krakow. She also obtained false papers for the girl and then took her to Warsaw where she was hidden by Irena Chmura and her daughter Wanda (recognized as Righteous). During the Polish Uprising in Warsaw in 1944 the Chmuras could no longer keep Miriam with them, and Duszczynska found her a Polish family in Krakow that took care of her until the end of the war. Miriam was in contact with Duszczynska until 1946, but then lost touch with her. Contact was renewed in 1997 with her daughter, and then Miriam Perlberger - Shmuel asked to recognized her rescuer as Righteous Among the Nations. On November 30, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Zofia Duszczyńska as Righteous Among the Nations. File 7853
