Drozdowski Michał Dr. Natan Hindes, his wife, Regina, and their 11-year-old daughter, Marlena, lived in the town of Trembowla, in the Tarnopol district, in eastern Galicia. Among Dr. Hindes’ patients was Michał Drozdowski, a gardener, who lived in the nearby village of Sady. During the German occupation, the Hindes family managed to survive three Aktionen. In April 1943, they sought out Drozdowski hoping that he would be able help them. Drozdowski did not let them down. Guided by Christian love, he dug them an underground shelter under a stable in his farmyard, where he looked after them devotedly. Despite the fact that his neighbors had been made an example of for harboring Jews, Drozdowski sheltered his charges for about a year, until the area was liberated by the Red Army. After the war, the Hindes family immigrated to Germany where they kept up close ties with their rescuer until their death. Their daughter, who later moved to Poland, also kept up contact with Drozdowski. On October 4, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Michał Drozdowski as Righteous Among the Nations. File 5456
