Files 3048 and 3048a Ciosmak, Anna / 3048 Rogowska-Ciosmak, Lucyna / 3048 Hrysiak, Mieczysław / 3048a Hrysiak, Zuzanna / 3048a After 16-year-old Szuster Ryfka (later known as- Finkelstein Rebecca) and her 18-year-old brother Anczel (Anchel; Jankiel) [later known as- Szuster Yacob] survived the Aktion in the town of Korytnica, in the Volhynia district, in which all other members of their family perished; they fled to the nearby village of Sieliski, hoping to find shelter with one of their parents’ acquaintances. At first they worked on various farms, but when the danger of discovery intensified, they turned to the village mayor, Leszczuk, who agreed to shelter them on his farm for a month. However, he soon changed his mind, and drove them out with threats that he would report them to the authorities. In desperation, Ryfka and Anchel turned to Ciosmak Anna, a friend of their parents, who lived in the village with her little daughter, Lucyna [later known as- Buszko]. Ciosmak, out of loyalty to her former friends, allowed the two refugees to hide in her hayloft, free of charge. However, the village mayor, who suspected the two refugees were hiding in the vicinity, began hunting them down. Ryfka and Anchel had no choice but to leave Ciosmak’s house. Their new rescuers were Hrysiak Mieczysław and Zuzanna who agreed to feed them, but were afraid to put them up in their home. Anchel and Ryfka, therefore, had no alternative but to spend the night in the Hrysiaks’ hayloft without their knowledge. When the Hrysiaks discovered them there, far from being angry, they offered them shelter in their house over the winter, despite their fear of being discovered by their Ukrainian neighbors or the village mayor. In the spring of 1943, the Szusters returned to Ciosmak’s house where they stayed until March 1945. After the war, Anchel immigrated to Israel, while his sister to the United States. On December 6, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Ciosmak Anna, Hrysiak Zuzannaand Mieczysław as Righteous Among the Nations. On July 21, 1993, Yad Vashem also recognized Rogowska-Ciosmak Lucyna as Righteous Among the Nations.
