File 2631
Buczkowski, Karol
After the German occupation in 1941, Otto Rajnisz, a lawyer who lived in Kamionka-Strumiłowa, near Tarnopol, fled from his birthplace. He had been active in community affairs, and was now being sought by the Nazis. Otto appealed for help to Karol Buczkowski, a longstanding acquaintance from his hometown. The latter came to his aid and found him lodgings in the nearby village of Sielec Bieńków, where he obtained work as an agricultural laborer. Karol was employed locally as a drainage supervisor and as he was close to the authorities, he learned of their intention to search the village for Jews. He quickly warned Otto, who succeeded in hiding and thereby escaping certain arrest and deportation. After a while, it became clear that Otto was in mortal danger in Sielec Bieńków. Karol obtained forged documents for Otto (in the name of Adamczyk Jan) as well as for his wife. Afterwards, (Otto) moved to the village of Niezwiska (located in the Horodeń county, Stanisławów voivodeship), where he found employment and remained until the liberation of the area by the Red Army.
On September 27, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Karol Buczkowski as Righteous Among the Nations.
