Westerburg Hesse-Nassau, Germany. The community grew from 60 in 1760 to 135 (9% of the total) in 1871. It was affiliated with the Bad Ems rab¬binate. Jews prospered in the 19th century, opening stores and a cigar factory which the Nazis later "Aryanized." On Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938), the synagogue's interior was destroyed. By 1939 most of the 85 Jews registered there in 1933 had left; 26 perished in the Holocaust.
