In Jewish sources the town was known as Hechi. Jews numbered 105 in 1837 (total 1,346) and 36 in 1933, with a synagogue dating from 1730. In 1935-40, 31 left, 18 of them emigrating from Germany; the rest were deported to Izbica in the Lublin district (Poland) and to the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942.
