LANGENSELBOLD Hesse-Nassau, Germany. Es¬tablished in the late 17th century, the community dedi-cated a synagogue in 1714 (enlarged in 1849), main¬tained a Jewish elementary school from 1824 to 1934, and was strictly Orthodox. Affiliated with the rabbinate of Hanau, its members engaged in the livestock trade. They numbered 178 in 1861 and 226 in 1933. The synagogue's interior and its Torah scrolls were burned immediately after Kristallnacht (9-10 Nov. 1938). By 1940, 172 Jews had left (97emigrating); at least 41 died in the Holo¬caust.
