Adelsdorf, Germany

Place
The community is first mentioned in 1669 as a victim of peasant riots. Few Jews lived there in the 18th century. Subsequently the Jews reached a peak population of 265 in 1837 (total 870) before steadily declining through emigration to the larger cities of Bavaria; in 1933, 60 remained. All 12 Jewish homes were vandalized on “Kristallnacht” (9 – 10 November 1938) and the interior of the synagogue was destroyed. Jews were again attacked after an attempt on Hitler’s life in Munich (9 Nov. 1939). Nine Jews under the definition of Germany’s racial laws remained in Adelsdorf after 25 April 1942.
