Jews are mentioned in the 13th century, and six families with permanent residence rights were present in the 16th century. A synagogue was erected in 1723 and a Jewish public school operated from the first half of the 19th century. The Jewish population declined steadily from 452 (total 1,142) in 1809 to 211 in 1880 and 34 in 1933. Nineteen Jews left in 1938-41. Six were deported to Piaski (Poland) on 3 April 1942 and the last two to the Theresienstadt ghetto on 10 August.
