Matvei Lichterman was born in Roslavl, the Soviet Union in 1921. His parents were Zadok and Chaya Lichterman. His brother Yosef was born in 1924. Matvei was drafted into the Red Army at the start of the war. He was parachuted into the area of the city of Uman on 17/09/1943, and was taken captive by the Germans. Matvei hid that he was Jewish and, six months after he was taken captive, he succeeded in escaping; he joined another unit that was transferred to Czechoslovakia.
