Gerhard Gronefeld was born in 1911 in Berlin. He studied photography and in 1935 he joined Heinrich Hoffmanns photography business. After the outbreak of WWII he joined the Wehrmacht and served as a PK photographer, stationed among others in Poland, Belgium, France, Serbia and the USSR.
