Au cours de la Shoah, les Juifs ont été assassinés de diverses façons : gazage, exécution par balle, immolation, noyade, enterrés vivants, épuisement par les travaux forcés, affamement, maladies et épidémies, privation de soins médicaux et de mesures de salubrité, etc. Certains Juifs ont mis fin à leur vie pour échapper à l'arrestation, aux persécutions ou aux souffrances permanentes et sans aucun espoir. Des dizaines de milliers de soldats juifs servant dans l’armée soviétique et capturés comme prisonniers de guerre furent sélectionnés comme juifs et assassinés.
